The Cycling Journey of Chakravarthy S. Birur

Adding the 2023 edition of the Paris–Brest–Paris (PBP) brings this story full circle. What began as a personal rediscovery of fitness has evolved into a masterclass in long-term athletic consistency, resilience, and community building.

The Call of the Saddle

Every great journey has a quiet period before the storm.

For Chakravarthy S. Birur â€” known affectionately in cycling circles as â€śChakra” â€” the foundations of endurance were laid decades ago. In his college years, he was a committed pentathlon athlete, forged in discipline and competitive grit.

Then came life.

Business responsibilities grew. Family took priority. Like many athletes, sport moved to the background — not forgotten, but postponed.

In 2012, at the age of 44, the spark was reignited.

What began as a simple pursuit of fitness quickly became something deeper. Chakra didn’t just start riding again — he started asking how far the human body and mind could go on two wheels.

From Fitness to Randonneuring

By the end of 2012, neighborhood loops gave way to the structured, demanding world of Audax India Randonneurs (AIR). His first brevet attempt in Chennai marked a turning point.

By 2014, he took on one of the toughest tests in Indian randonneuring — a 1,000 km brevet from Chennai to Vijayawada.

This was not just about physical endurance. It was about mental resilience, sleep deprivation, logistics, and self-belief.

That successful finish earned him qualification for the world’s most prestigious endurance cycling event:

Paris–Brest–Paris (PBP).

The PBP Odyssey (2015 → 2023)

The road to PBP is never straight. Chakra’s journey with this legendary 1,200 km event reflects persistence more than perfection.

  • 2015 — The Lesson
Making his debut on the global stage and representing Coimbatore, a mechanical failure forced him to withdraw midway. He didn’t frame it as failure — only as a lesson in progress.
  • 2019 — The Breakthrough
Better prepared, mentally tougher, and wiser from experience, he returned to France and successfully completed PBP, earning his place among finishers of one of cycling’s toughest events.
  • 2023 — The Statement
At an age when many scale back, Chakra lined up once again. His third participation in Paris–Brest–Paris 2023 wasn’t about proving anything — it was about consistency. Navigating the rolling French countryside, he once again carried the spirit of Coimbatore onto the international stage.

The Architect of Coimbatore Cycling

Chakravarthy’s most enduring legacy isn’t measured in kilometers — it’s measured in community.

He was instrumental in bringing Brevet events to Coimbatore, ensuring local riders had access to world-class endurance platforms. As a founder member of Coimbatore Cycling, he helped transform the city into a recognised randonneuring hub.

Today, his roles span multiple dimensions:

  • Mentor & Official
Frequently serves as Ride Responsible for major BRMs, including demanding routes through Ooty and Kotagiri.
  • The Hub of Cycology
Co-founder of Cycology, a premium bicycle store in Coimbatore — more than retail, it’s a sanctuary where gear, grit, and camaraderie intersect.

The Philosophy of the Slow Lane

In a world obsessed with speed, Chakra takes a different view.

He often speaks of riding through village mud roads â€” places where a bicycle’s pace allows you to observe life, landscapes, and people. For him, the bicycle is not just transport or sport.

It is a â€śwonderful machine” â€” one that offers perspective, humility, and connection.

The Journey Continues

Today, Chakravarthy S. Birur is a triathlete, mentor, organiser, and advocate for sustainable fitness. Whether he’s coordinating a local 100K brevet or riding across France, his journey stands as proof that reclaiming the athlete within has no expiry date.

As dawn breaks over the Coimbatore–Palladam road, chances are you’ll still find him there — steady, composed, moving forward.

One pedal stroke at a time.
